We describe the research dataset “External position of banks (AUSTA)” using a structured metadata schema. This document consists of three sections. In the first section we describe the general properties of the dataset as a whole, such as its scope and coverage and the methods of data collection and data appraisal. The second section looks at the variable level, providing an overview and detailed tables for each variable. The last section looks at the definitions of key words. An appendix contains a synopsis of assets and liabilities for domestic banks and their foreign branches and subsidiaries.
