In the EU, persons with disabilities still face difficulties in exercising their electoral rights. Around 27% of the EU population has some form of disability.
(2) This includes persons who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
The report(3) issued by the Commission on the 2019 elections to the European Parliament underlined that citizens with disabilities face additional barriers to exercising their electoral rights.
(4) The report emphasised the importance of tackling these barriers in view of the next elections to the European Parliament.
The Commission announced in its strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities its intention.
