Presenting “Disease X”, a hypothetical infection posing a public health risk, this report aims to help the Pacific implement responsive measures to mitigate the disproportionate impact of future crises on women and ensure an inclusive recovery.
Drawing on lessons learned from COVID-19, which reversed gender equality gains, the report outlines the need for gender-inclusive preparedness and response to outbreaks of unforeseen pathogens. Targeting the Pacific’s policymakers and gender equality professionals, it recommends reinforcing gender-disaggregated data, boosting social protection, and ensuring equal vaccine access to help build resilient health systems that can better cope with future outbreaks.
