China’s documented global investment was stable in 2024. The electric vehicle supply chain continues to be prominent. Construction volume rose solidly, led by the building of solar and other power plants. Saudi Arabia was the most active partner.
China’s Ministry of Commerce may report record-high investment for 2024. The existing record in 2016 brought headline deals and policy reassessments around the world, including in China. Nothing like that is happening now―what’s counted as investment has changed.
Chinese investment in the US is not presently an important issue. It’s unclear whether that’s true for American investment in China, since there is little useful information on where money is spent. Those numbers might show the US helping China, not competing with it.
