Chronic absenteeism rates nearly doubled during the pandemic and remain high. Across states, one in four students is now chronically absent. Students across the board are missing more school than they did before the pandemic. Increased absences on average and across the distribution of students suggest a broad shift in attendance behavior. Attendance is no longer concentrated among a small group of outliers. A larger share of students is missing school at moderate to high levels, and near-perfect attendance has become much less common. Despite these broader shifts, one pattern has not changed: The most frequently absent students still account for the majority of missed instructional time.
