The evolution of cleantech manufacturing
As Europe moves toward its net-zero emissions goals, cleantech manufacturing - particularly in batteries, wind turbines, and solar photovoltaics - is becoming increasingly vital to regional growth. This OECD case study, carried out with the support of the European Commission’s DG REGIO, explores global foreign direct investment (FDI) trends and their implications for local SMEs in Europe’s cleantech sectors. Combining strategic foresight analysis with insights from a dedicated workshop, the project assesses potential future scenarios for cleantech value chains. It focuses on the role of SMEs, the dynamics of international investment, and the opportunities for regional development. The study aims to inform effective policy actions to strengthen FDI-SME ecosystems and foster cleantech manufacturing, particularly in less-developed EU regions.
