The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) Act substantially expands benefits for farmers from the generous subsidy programs that were authorized under the 2018 Farm Bill, increasing federal agricultural subsidy payments by $65.5 billion over the next 10 years.
The OBBB also increases coverage levels and premium rate subsidies to farmers and other subsidies paid to private crop insurance companies, which operate the federal crop insurance program, the major source of federal welfare payments for farmers today.
Agricultural committee members are discussing a potential “skinny farm bill” that would address issues ignored in the OBBB, such as conservation and research, but passage before 2026 is unlikely given legislative gridlock, the narrow partisan balance in Congress, and other issues with which legislators are currently dealing.
