National-Level Costs of Implementing 30x30 in Latin America and the Caribbean
This policy brief examines the financial implications of implementing Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), which aims to conserve 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 (“30x30”). The brief quantifies establishment, management, and opportunity costs for 26 IDB member countries, estimating total costs between USD $9.56 billion and $11.37 billion. The brief underscores the long-term economic and ecological benefits of conservation and outlines how the IDB can support countries through technical assistance, strategic planning, and innovative financing. These findings aim to inform policy dialogue, budget planning, and international cooperation to help LAC countries meet their biodiversity commitments.
