The Trump administration’s Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education sparked an overdue conversation about the relationship between the federal government and American universities, drawing praise for the way it identified problems in universities and concerns about executive branch overreach.
Signatories to the compact were asked to make a number of commitments in exchange for receiving preferential treatment for federal funding.
In response to the compact, AEI’s Conservative Education Reform Network commissioned eight reports from conservative education thinkers. Each report addresses one of the priorities laid out in the compact, offering suggestions for more durable reforms to be passed by Congress and state legislatures and pursued by responsible campus leaders.
