Korea aims to revitalise productivity growth and promote balanced territorial development. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help improve regional development policies, achieve greater administrative efficiency and accountability, enhance the spatial targeting of policies and support multi-level governance. In turn, regional development policy can help address emerging disparities in AI adoption and drive a broader and more inclusive regional AI transformation. Korea has taken early steps, at national and subnational levels, to boost the transition of industry, public services and society across places. Building on the OECD Recommendation on Regional Development Policy, a stock-taking of 19 OECD uses cases and OECD work on the local factor in AI transitions, this paper presents policy considerations for Korea to advance the AI agenda for regional development.
