Private Philanthropy for Development in Mexico (Revised Edition)
OECD
2026.02.11
This report explores how philanthropy contributes to development in Mexico. It looks at the role of domestic foundations, international funders and official development assistance, highlighting how each of these sources supports social and economic progress. Philanthropy in Mexico has grown quickly in recent decades, fuelled by the rise of large private foundations and wealthy individuals. Between 2020 and 2023, domestic organisations provided far more resources than international foundations, showing the growing strength of local giving. At the same time, most of this support remains concentrated in just a few foundations and in wealthier regions, such as Mexico City and Nuevo Le?n.

The report aims to help governments, foundations, researchers and civil society groups better understand how private giving shapes development in Mexico. By comparing domestic and cross-border philanthropy with official aid, it offers a clearer picture of where resources come from, where they go, and where gaps remain.

This revised edition clarifies the analysis of the sectoral and regional allocations of domestic philanthropic flows.
