Yield vs. Nutrients: What Drives Farmers’ Varietal Adoption Decisions in Bangladesh?
ADB
2026.03.09
Using primary data collected from 3,493 households in the Faridpur district of Bangladesh, we investigate the factors influencing farmers’ preference for high-yielding rice varieties over other beneficial traits such as nutritional value, stress tolerance, and input efficiency. Descriptive findings demonstrate that 81% of the sampled farm households expressed their preference for higher-yielding traits in rice, while only 19% indicated that they preferred other traits, such as enhanced nutrition, being climate-smart, input efficiency, and resistance to disease and pets. Using logistic regression in a machine learning setting, we find that the age and education levels of both household heads and spouses significantly affect varietal choice, with older and relatively more educated household heads and spouses being more likely to opt for varieties with such other traits. However, asset ownership (e.g., mobile phones, motorbikes, power tillers) and household size are also positively associated with a preference for a high yield. Moreover, households facing credit constraints and those that are self-sufficient in rice production are more inclined toward high-yielding traits, suggesting that economic motivations are central to decision-making. These findings emphasize that productivity concerns still dominate farmers’ varietal choices in Bangladesh and suggest that future rice breeding and dissemination strategies in Bangladesh should integrate high yield with other desirable traits to enhance adoption and meet broader food security and resilience goals.
