Strategies for technical cooperation for clean air in Asia-Pacific
UNESCAP
2026.04.17
Air pollution in the Asia-Pacific is a structural challenge affecting health, climate, productivity, and urban sustainability. Urbanization, industrial growth, transport demand, and traditional combustion hinder progress, while capacity gaps and transboundary pollution limit national responses, requiring regional cooperation.

This RAPAP study reviews management systems and technology needs across member States. Despite existing frameworks, gaps persist in implementation, data integration, emissions inventories, and financing, with key sources including transport, residential combustion, and open burning.

Findings emphasize the need for short-term emission reduction and long-term system strengthening, focusing on diesel particulate filters, low-cost sensor and IoT systems, and satellite-based monitoring, supported by integrated policies, data systems, and capacity-building.
