The 2026 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific examines a central question for the region: how can Asia-Pacific economies advance the transition towards an environmentally sustainable economy while sustaining socioeconomic prosperity? Although the region continues to grow faster than the rest of the world, deepening geopolitical conflicts, rising trade protectionism and uneven development gains are adding pressure on economic prospects, with vulnerable groups likely to be hit hardest. Against this backdrop, and amid rising climate ambitions, the Survey presents a new analytical framework and draws on insights from political economy and behavioural science to show how countries can pursue transition pathways that reflect their distinct priorities and circumstances. It also underscores the importance of stronger regional cooperation to reinforce national efforts and support countries with weaker implementation capacity.
The Survey, published annually since 1947, is a flagship publication produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). It provides analyses to guide policy discussion on current and emerging socioeconomic issues and policy challenges in support of sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.
