Carbon Free Energy Initiative Roundtable Meeting in the IEA Ministerial Meeting
Mar 2024
The Korean government hosted a roundtable meeting  on the Carbon Free Energy Initiative in Paris on February 13 with Canada, Japan, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The participants discussed ways to cooperate and promote the development of zero-and low-emission technologies to achieve the global goal of carbon neutrality, as agreed at the 28th Session of the Conference of Parties (COP28).

The participants also recognized the Carbon Free Energy (CFE) Initiative which was proposed by Korea on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2023. The Initiative highlighted the importance of utilizing various carbon free energy sources available in light of the different circumstances faced by nations. The participants also acknowledged the importance of active private sector engagement and underscored the imperative to promote demand-side cooperation between the public and private  sectors.

The Korean government shared its idea of launching the CFE Initiative Global Working Group to establish a CFE Program, which includes developing an internationally recognized criteria for carbon-free energy and establishing a global certification program. It also encouraged participants to join the global working group to strengthen  cooperation among like-minded countries.
