#01. “The Metaverse is coming.”
#02. Transcending space, transcending limitations!
The Metaverse era is emerging as a new reality for humanity.
#03. But what exactly is the Metaverse?
It’s a buzzword we often hear―but what do we know about it?
#04. Metaverse is a portmanteau of the words meta, meaning virtual and transcending, and universe, referring to a world or space.
#05. The term Metaverse was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash. The Metaverse refers to a virtual world in which economic, social, and cultural activities take place, just as in reality.
#06. The Metaverse includes Augmented Reality, Lifelogging, Mirror Worlds, Virtual Worlds, and more.
#07. Let’s explore each realm, one at a time.
#08. First, Augmented Reality is an environment that combines virtual objects or information with the real world.
#09. Think of Pokemon Go, a game that was once popular around the world.
#10. It’s an iconic example of Augmented Reality, using a smartphone app to hunt down virtual Pokemon characters that emerge in the physical world.
#11. Another example is European aircraft maker Airbus, which adopted an Augmented Reality system called MiRA to provide 3D information related to aircraft research, development, and production, all in three-dimensional form.
#12. Because of this, the three-week bracket inspection period was reduced to just three days, proving how the Metaverse can bring innovation to efficiency in manufacturing.
#13. Now let’s enter a different realm of the Metaverse.
#14. The second type of Metaverse is lifelogging.
This means recording everyday experiences and information firsthand, or using devices, and then recreating or sharing them within virtual spaces.
#15. Lifelogging includes using social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook as part of our daily routine as well as apps that track and share health information, such as Nike’s Run Club, which records the distance you run and your heart rate.
#16. Shall we open the third door?
#17. Another area of the Metaverse is Mirror Worlds.
Mirror Worlds are virtual spaces that replicate the physical world in an informationally enhanced form.
#18. Google Earth is one example, offering a 3D map of the world.
#19. The map recreates every corner of our world through a virtual world, where we can discover locations, geographical features, buildings’ appearances―and, of course, information about restaurants, along with user ratings.
#20. There’s another Mirror World that we’re well-acquainted with.
It’s Airbnb, familiar to most people who travel often.
#21. It’s a platform for sharing accommodation. You can put your space up for rent for as long as needed. It doesn’t just have details on the price and location but also includes the floor plan, amenities, and appliances provided by the host.
#22. Now we get to the final door.
#23. Virtual worlds literally means “virtual cyberspaces”.
The real world expands and is recreated in a similar or new fashion.
Most online games with multiple players are in this category.
#24. Launched in 2006, Roblox is a widely recognized “virtual worlds” platform.
#25. Using Lego-like avatars, players can communicate with one another and not only engage in fun and games but also earn and spend Robux, the platform’s primary currency.
#26. Another example of Virtual Worlds is the online video game Fortnite, released by Epic Games.
Although it’s an established shooting game, Fortnite has a “Party Royale” mode that enables players to communicate in diverse ways without engaging in combat.
It’s a service with a distinctive Metaverse element.
#27. US hip hop artist Travis Scott held a Party Royale concert with his avatar, drawing incredible fanfare.
#28. The Metaverse realms we’ve looked at are mutually reinforcing, evolving together as a new form of service.
#29. Transcending the boundaries of space and the limits of reality, the Metaverse brings us new and astounding experiences.
#30. We’ll have to wait and see how the Metaverse will change our lives in the future!
