As we take public transportation to visit a hospital, receive medical treatment, enjoy online shopping, and share our daily lives, we leave digital footprints of our personal data. Companies collect and analyze this data to develop new services. These services offer convenience, But we can’t help worrying: Is our data truly being managed safely? It‘s time to take a closer look.

Is managing and processing data the responsibility only of companies? Have you ever experienced your data being shared externally or used for marketing without your knowing? Some people who experienced this unease began to recognize their rights over their data and the importance of taking control of managing their personal information. They asserted ownership of their data, and in 2016 this movement evolved into the “MyData” paradigm. In 2018, the nonprofit organization “MyData Global” was launched, further accelerating the spread of this concept. That same year, the European Union introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), legally enshrining personal data rights.

One of the core concepts of MyData is the “Right to Data Portability.” This right goes beyond simply viewing or downloading personal data held by companies or institutions; rather, it empowers individuals to request the transfer of their data to another company or institution. Imagine a world in which you could directly move your data from one company to another.
As individuals recognize the true value of their data, they will take a more proactive role in managing their credit, assets, and health information. Meanwhile, companies receiving these data will be motivated to offer the most personalized and innovative services. Open Banking allows you to view and manage your financial data from banks, credit cards, insurance, and securities, all in one place. It’s a prime example of a financial MyData service.

So what does MyData need to function properly? First, individuals must have full control and decision-making power over their data, determining how their data is accessed, transferred, and used. Second, companies must provide a secure, user-friendly environment that allows individuals to access their data whenever they choose. Third, data must be allowed to flow freely with the individual’s consent.
