How federal, state, and local leaders can leverage the CHIPS and Science Act as a landmark workforce opportunity
The $250 billion CHIPS and Science Act is known for its focus on boosting U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and innovation, but it’s also one of the most important workforce development laws in years. Thirty-three of the act’s programs support STEM-related education, training, and outreach in at least some way. Significant funding from the act prioritizes training for skilled technical jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree. Key programs within the act represent a pathbreaking effort to integrate economic and workforce development together, as they too rarely are. The act will engage with a significant number of American metropolitan and rural areas, though its reach will not be universal. Full funding of the act and extensive federal-state-local-business coordination will be necessary to maximize the law’s beneficial impacts.
