Incumbent Inventors and Firm Innovation

한국경제연구원은 기존 발명자가 기업 혁신에 미치는 영향을 분석한 보고서를 발표하였다.

This paper studies how incumbent inventors affect firm innovation. Building on the recombinant view of innovation, we develop a model in which retaining incumbent inventors generates a trade-off: retention can increase innovation by facilitating the integration of dispersed knowledge and the transfer of tacit expertise, but it can also reduce innovation by reinforcing rigidity in the generation of novel combinations. We also design an empirical analysis to identify which case is most consistent with the data. Using a panel of 3,092 U.S. listed firms from 1980 to 2016, we find that inventor incumbency is positively associated with firm innovation, primarily through recombinant reuse, while its relationship with recombinant creation is weaker. Moreover, these positive associations become more pronounced for both types of innovation as knowledge diversity and technological path dependence increase. Overall, the results suggest that incumbent inventors contribute to firm innovation primarily as knowledge integrators, especially in more demanding knowledge environments.
