Leveraging Social Protection for Nutrition in the Pacific
ADB
2026.09.04
This brief examines how social protection systems can be leveraged to improve nutrition outcomes in Pacific island countries through integrated approaches that combine social protection with complementary interventions and services. Food and nutrition insecurity in the Pacific is driven by factors including poverty, vulnerability to the impacts of climate change and economic shocks, changing food systems, and limited access to services, with women and children particularly affected. The brief outlines how social protection policies, programs, and delivery systems can be strengthened to better support nutrition outcomes. It highlights the importance of stronger cross-sector coordination, coherent policy frameworks, predictable and adequate financing, gender-responsive and adaptive social protection, and stronger links between social protection and complementary interventions to address food and nutrition insecurity and promote sustainable nutrition outcomes in the Pacific.
