The Role of Remittances in Household Resilience to Extreme Weather in the Kyrgyz Republic: Evidence from Panel Data
This paper examines how remittances influence household expenditure during drought and excess rainfall in the Kyrgyz Republic. Evidence from analysis of 2019-2023 household panel data suggests that remittances may help sustain household expenditure during extreme weather events. The strongest protective effects are observed among rural and high-altitude communities, who are most reliant on climate-sensitive livelihoods. The poorest households show limited ability to use remittances to adjust their spending in periods of extreme weather.
