Nature, financial stability and supervision: emerging priorities for central banks
UNESCAP
2026.10.30
Nature-related risks are becoming increasingly relevant to central banks and financial supervisors because biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and the transition to
biodiversity-positive economic models can affect macroeconomic conditions, financial stability and the resilience of supervised financial institutions (NGFS, 2024). It is also
established that business activity across virtually all sectors depends, directly or indirectly, on biodiversity and ecosystem services, creating material risk exposures for the sectors to which commercial banks lend and invest (Egoh and others, 2026). The integration of nature related financial risks into central banking frameworks is thus not a normative environmental objective but a prudential imperative, ultimately serving a core mandate for central banks: safeguarding monetary and financial system stability and resilience.
