This report was commissioned by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to provide a comprehensive review of ecosystem services valuation studies conducted since 2014 in the Pacific Islands region, highlighting the economic benefits of coastal and marine resources. It also examines how these values have been integrated into decision-making processes, including policy debates, conservation strategies, and financing mechanisms. The report underscores the importance of mainstreaming environmental considerations into economic decision-making to ensure sustainable development and effective resource management. The findings from this review indicate that while ecosystem services values (ESVs) are increasingly incorporated into policy discussions, their integration into economic and financial instruments remains limited. Expanding the use of ESVs in policy frameworks requires more robust valuation methodologies, improved data collection, and stronger financing mechanisms to ensure sustainable resource management. Governments and stakeholders in the Pacific Islands region should further explore innovative financing solutions, such as carbon markets and biodiversity credits, to support conservation efforts. Furthermore, recognizing and incorporating Indigenous and cultural values into ecosystem services valuation frameworks will be crucial in developing more inclusive and effective environmental policies.
