OECD review of parliamentary budget oversight in Chile
This OECD review examines the role of the Chilean National Congress in budgetary oversight. While Chile‘s sound budget institutions have been a cornerstone of its historically strong fiscal performance, recent developments underscore the need for a more robust legislative engagement in the budget process to ensure continued fiscal discipline and accountability. To enable Congress to fulfil its role as a critical budget institution, this report recommends establishing a strong, non-partisan Joint Budget Office serving both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. It also recommends implementing procedural reforms to reinforce the institutional capacity of Congress to perform budget scrutiny. These reforms can provide the foundation for a responsible and effective role for Congress in the budget process.
